Do You Have Stick Lip Balms?
A question we’re often asked is, “Do you have stick lip balms?”
And the answer is simple: no, we don’t.
Why not? Well, there are a few good reasons, and they all come down to what we believe in - high-quality, natural skincare that’s as kind to the planet as it is to your skin.
The Environmental Impact of Plastic Lip Balm Containers
Plastic lip balm tubes might be small, but they’re part of a much bigger problem. Here’s why we choose not to use them. Most plastic lip balm tubes are made from petroleum-based materials like polypropylene or polyethylene.
That means they come from crude oil, something that takes millions of years to form and, once used, is gone forever. The problem doesn’t end there. Once discarded, a plastic lip balm tube will sit in a landfill for anywhere between 400 to 1,000 years before it even starts to break down.
And when it does, it doesn’t just vanish. It fragments into microplastics that find their way into our soil, rivers, and oceans… and us! Some plastic lip balm tubes can be recycled, but the reality is, most of them aren’t.
They’re often too small for standard recycling facilities to process efficiently, so they end up in landfill or incinerators - where they release even more harmful emissions. In fact, less than 9% of all plastic ever made has actually been recycled. It’s an incredibly difficult substance to recycle.
Because lip balm tubes are lightweight, they can easily be blown away from bins and landfills, ending up in nature. Once they reach rivers and oceans, they’re mistaken for food by marine animals, causing unnecessary deaths and contributing to plastic pollution in a devastating way.
So, What’s the Alternative?
Thankfully, many brands (including us) are making the switch to more sustainable packaging options. Some companies have started using compostable tubes made from materials like cardboard or bamboo, which break down naturally over time.
I personally want to explore this further. Others are turning to refillable tins or glass jars - durable, reusable, and far better for the planet. We use glass jars. Some brands experiment with biodegradable plastics, though these still require specific conditions to break down properly.
Our Final Thought
A single plastic lip balm tube might not seem like much, but when you multiply that by the millions thrown away each year, it becomes a serious problem. That’s why we’re committed to doing things differently - keeping things natural, sustainable, and as plastic-free as we possibly can.
At a guess, I’d say our product packaging contains as little as 2% plastic across the entire range.
So, if you’re looking for a high-quality, eco-friendly lip balm that truly cares for your lips and the planet, you’re in the right place.
